Josephine and Matthew have been trusting me for years to document their story. When I had the chance to shoot with them in their new home and preserve their experiences of moving to a new city as a couple, of course I was honoured. They wanted their Toronto adventure session to reflect their adventurous spirit, the nostalgic feeling of starting a new chapter, and the timeless love they share. As a candid destination couples and wedding photographer, this was a dream.

On the day of the shoot, we woke up to an absolute snowglobe. The city was covered in a blanket of fresh snow, creating a moody atmosphere for our session. Josephine loves a fresh snowfall, so couldn’t have asked for a better setting to capture their story.

We started the session at the huge Christmas trees in a city square and then ventured into the snowy streets. We dodged cars and raced traffic lights, and took some time to stare up at the skyscrapers disappearing in the fog. As they explored, I focused on the passerby’s perspective – what a stranger sharing the streets might see, a true documentary perspective. I used minimal direction, and I encouraged them to express themselves freely. This enabled me to capture their natural interactions in front of iconic Toronto landmarks.

Of course, no afternoon in Toronto would be complete without an amazing meal. When we were sufficiently wet and cold, we found a ramen joint to warm up and catch up on everything they’ve been up to.

Thinking back to this snowy winter afternoon Toronto adventure session, I am overcome by how photography has the power to capture not just moments, but emotions and experiences. Josephine and Matthew’s story of moving to Toronto as a couple is forever documented in these photographs – candid, timeless, and nostalgic. It was an honour to be chosen as their photographer again. It was an honour to be trusted with capturing their story in this new city they now call home.
